Oil reaching for the stratosphere, G8 worried!

With Oil reaching the stratosphere with prices as high as $135, the G8 have started to apply the 'squeeze' on OPEC, urging them to increase production so as to alleviate the demand on the Oil rates. OPEC as we all know, has so far refused to do so, rationalizing that any such increase in production may lead to a resource depletion.

That rationalization as well as the fact that most of the Oil producing nations have started to see benefits in the high price of Oil, falls flat especially when one considers that there are billions of gallons of Oil available. Furthermore, if inflation is set to continue the current trend on a worldwide scale, it may after all be the right time to develop an alternative to Oil. Currently there are certain projects in the initiation phase, with the goal being to render Oil worthless altogether. But any such alternate fuel developed will have to undergo years of testing and in the meantime, it seems that we cannot do anything much except to grin and bear it.

The U.S treasury secretary Henry Paulson has made it known that the current spikes in the Oil price is not on account of speculators but that it is more on account of a supply and demand problem. It is high time that OPEC realized that it cannot have it both ways and that it should take into account the growth in world population and the increasing demand on Oil, therefore it should increase the production right away. One can only hope that the G8 will ultimately prevail, let us hope so.

Homes humping the economy down?

The title may sound a bit crass but given the fact that this is the sixth straight month that the sales data for homes has fallen flat, one cannot help to think but exactly that. The homes data just seems to be heading in one direction and that is the basement level. This is the sixth straight month where the sales of new homes has fallen low and analysts are predicting that this is bound to get even worse.
With unemployment increasing day by day and with the consumer confidence at an all time low, people are just not interested in dumping all of their life savings on an asset that may well be devalued in a few months time.

But then again, there is the other side of the coin; the prices of new homes are at an all time low. The days of when you thought that the mansion next door must be well above your price range are long gone. These days, one never knows what one can get within ones price range, who knows, it may even turn out to be a mansion in Bel-air. With such low prices one would have thought that the Realtors would have to be beating off the crowd with a huge stick. But the sad reality is that even such low rates are not enough to jump start a customer’s enthusiasm these days.

Even with rates of new homes slipping by as much as 4% the crowd just does not seem to be knocking at the front door. What is a disturbing tendency in all of this is the fact that there are over 4 million homes unsold and with the current rates of home sales, we may well have to wait for nearly 10 months to clear up the deck.
Naturally when things are bleak, we are always told to look for the silver lining. So far the only one that I can find is the fact that I could afford that mansion at Bel-air, if I wanted to, but then again that would mean locking up my funds in an already cash strapped market. That is the quandary that every consumer finds himself or herself in at the moment!

Visa has announced its plans top go public and this may well turn out to be the largest IPO offering by a card processor. This may not be the best of times to go public with the economy being as it is, but with Visa, its presence in the markets worldwide should increase the demand for Visa shares , if not by American consumers then by international ones.

$146 Billion package passed by the house!

The stimulus plan of George bush has been passed and for the common man on the street this means tax rebates from $600-$1200. The stimulus package is one that had been designed in a hurry and the markets do not like it all that much. I have to say that I cannot blame in this; my personal opinion is that this stimulus package is too short sighted and it seems to serve more as a band aid to an all ready hemorraging economy than a cure for what ails it.

For one, it still does not address the huge problem of the credit crunch as well as that of the housing market, both of which are still intent on riding the economy far in to the doldrums. For one, had the administration envisioned a plan by which the housing rates were regulated and bought more pressure on the banks to increase their lending, that would have taken care of half of the problem. As it is, the housing market and the credit crisis barely got a mention in the 'state of the union' speech.

I think that we can all agree that George bush has some really good writers on his team and I am sure that they must have devoted whole sections of the state of the union speech to the current problems. I am betting that George bush forgot all about it and meandered on. Either way, the current stimulus plan is kind of like the 'Watergate' episode and they are still yet to learn that there is no point in closing the barn door long after the horses have escaped!

The Government is falling over itself with trying to do its best to prevent any financial crisis, but it is too late to shut the doors after all the horses have bolted.

The beginning of the sub prime crisis should have put the government on notice, but now, it is just too late to prevent anything from taking place. What has been put into motion cannot be stopped now, all one can do is to go with the flow. Both Martin Feldstein and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan are urging the government to do more to prevent any further escalation. Lets not forget that this is the same Greenspan who said that the sub prime crisis would 'blow away'.

Anyway, this is not the time to point fingers, but the time to do a reassessment and see what can be done to prevent anything like this from happening again.
No government is going to hand out money from the treasury to the citizens, but instead what the president can do is to waive the taxes for the affected people and that is just a small step in the right direction. Lets all hope that we do not get into any other war, any time soon, our economy cannot take any more pressure!

The new way of meeting new Friends or dates seems to be the chatting on the phone. This site is great in the sense that we can use the chat lines that are available here and talk to anyone and everyone that we feel like 'chatting up' with. The writers strike has taken a new turn with the Guild representing the writers pretty much throwing in the towel after the organisation representing the producers have walked out on them. This certainly represents the writers with a dilemma, as to whether they are prepared to cave in and go back to status quo as the producers and the studios would have them do so or to stand up and fight for their rights!

All this strike has managed to do so far is to almost cripple the Hollywood industry as we know it, most of the television shows are fast running out of scripts and soon they would either have to telecast only reruns or cancel the show altogether. At least the serials can telecast reruns whereas the reality shows may even have to be taken off the air altogether. Which is why when the Guild announced to the writers that they would be approaching the production houses with the aim of ending this strike, one way or the other, thereby bypassing the association representing the studios and the producers, the writers and the David Letterman show welcomed the decision whole heartily.

David Letterman, although a member of the association that had been talking with the writers unsuccessfully with regard to ending the strike, has welcomed the decision of the writers Guild whole heartily as this would entail that each and every production house would come to an individual agreement with the Guild. I guess, it all depends on how badly you want a new script altogether. Here is where the saying 'united we stand, divided we fall' comes to my mind. This way of striking by not working or co-operating is not new to us, I guess it all started with Mahatma Gandhi and his non cooperation movement to get the British raj to leave the Indian sub continent and I have to say that it was hugely successful then and it still is successful now. Any such movement with no violence and total non cooperation is bound to get results in the plenty. Personally I believe that the writers do deserve their just rewards and are entitled to what they are fighting for now. I hope that they do get it and that the show goes on!

The common economics states that as the inventory falls, more pressure is exerted on the supply as the demand for that product is constant and ever increasing. What am I talking about? I am talking about the price of Oil and the price tango that it seems to go into each and every time the Energy department announces to the world that the Inventories have either fallen or risen.
The rise in inventory would make the oil prices to swing the other way about and this time around, the inventory stocks in the United states has fallen by at least 700,000 barrels last week, according to the energy dept. Naturally this has started exerting more pressure on the crude supplies and the factors that can effect the supply of Oil to the United states. Naturally as this news broke out, the immediate effect today is the rise in the price for Light Crude for January delivery which has risen by 1.90$ to 91.92$ a barrel on the NY Mercantile Exchange.

The Oil market is tight as it is with the OPEC not really into making more deliverables than the current content. And at times like this if there is any news of a skirmish in the middle east or another Palestine - Israel conflict, that will have a very resounding impact on the Oil prices or if Bush were to get more hawkish on Iran or the entire Middle east, that will most definitely make the Oil reach for fresh pastures beyond the 105$ range.

What one should remember is that inventories rise and inventories fall, but it is when the inventories fall that one should take into account the other factors like the geo political factors. It is at times like this that the price of the Light Crude as well as the entire Oil market is most vulnerable and with the way that the U.S economy is under right now, we most certainly do not need a 'bullish' Oil market as that would only extend undue influence on the already falling Dollar and may even push it into the Nether world!

Finally the FED has managed to unify its plan with the other central banks and thereby alleviate the current credit crisis. The credit crunch is so bad that getting a car loan is in fact even more difficult than buying a car from the dealer on a standby basis. The markets reacted favorably to the news that all the central banks have managed to get moving on a common plan to alleviate the Credit crunch that is so evident in the markets today.
The DOW which had sagged unfavorably after the recent FED rate cut, seems to have finally shaken off the Bear claws and has started moving in the right direction,up. But of course, as soon as the sub prime disaster had hit the markets, this is what all the banks should have done. It has taken them this long to do what should have been done a long time back, but the investors and that includes me as well are all happy that they have finally show some backbone and have acted. One can only hope and pray that this momentum in the markets will continue on!

Arizona Big brother jumps on the Immigration bandwagon!

Arizona often touted as the IIEC[illegal immigration employment capital] of the United states may well soon lost that title altogether to Florida. With the recent law and the corresponding lawsuit filed against it, it has brought the issue of the Illegal immigration back into focus.

Of course, the question as to whether it is legal to hire an Illegal immigrant knowing that he/she is one, is currently illegal in Arizona the ex IIEC of the United states. But the recent suit against that very law that declares this to be illegal, seems to be far from over. The judge did not throw out the case because he considered it to be frivolous, but rather that it was filed against the wrong people and since it is a state law, it should be the state authorities in the dock and not the federal authorities, well as far as I could make out, that seems to be the reason.

All indications are that this law is already running into some problems and they are just bound to get a whole lot worse in the next couple of weeks. The question of whether it is right to hire illegal immigrants is one that has been bought in sharp focus by all this. There are those who will say that this law is the right one and that once the Illegal immigrants see that Arizona no longer has jobs for them, they will stop coming into Arizona. Then again, there are those who will argue that since the immigrants are already here, this law will deprive them of livelihood and so it is against human decency to do so. The employers will be on the side of the illegal immigrants since they will be losing a very valuable workforce. All in all, it is one dilemma that the state authorities would have to address very soon in a court of law!

Today more and more of those writers are turning to blogs and websites to earn a few dollars here and there as there seems to be no end to the Writer's strike. The Impasse continues with neither side willing to concede anything and as usual hard words are often exchanged through the very media that has been a bone of contention between the two of them. The writers want a bigger piece of the action as they often see their works being advertised on the WWW as well as the DVD releases.

I am not here to say who is right and who is wrong, but the fact of the matter is that if this Impasse continues any longer, there are many, many freelance writers who are more than willing to take on the contracts. It is high time that both these sides realise that they cannot do without one another, one one had the current writers provide a uniqueness to all the current Hollywood shows and television series that no freelance writer can bring to the table. And the writers should realise that sooner or later all patience is going to go right out of the window and soon, they are going to find themselves out of a lucrative job which may well go to the freelance writers of this world!

For a change, today saw the DOW rebound by 200 points as the news of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority investing more than 7.5 million$ in the already beleaguered Citigroup leaked out. This move is seem as a mark of confidence in the American economy and in this gloomy times, this news was indeed a welcome one at that.
But the underlying problems still remain and the investors confidence is indeed very much shaken at the very least.

The Stock markets all over the world have seen dramatic movements both ways all over the year but none have seen the consistent negative reading that the Dow has been giving off late. Today saw the Dow Jones decline by about 210 points and according to many analysts, we should expect more of the same in the near future. The Freddie mac news of losing nearly 2 billion$ has hit the markets very hard and on top of that we had Countrywide declare some major losses as well and to make matters worse, we had the analysts downgrade Freddie mac which by the way has also led to its counterpart Frannie mae reporting huge losses as well. The stocks of both Freddie mac and Countrywide has taken quite a beating especially with the news that there may be some liquidity problems in Countrywide in the very near future.
Things are bound to get worse before they get better but the million dollar question is 'how much worse are things going to get to?'. Canada crude fire and a weak Dollar push the crude prices up!

Everything seems to be pushing the Crude prices up, up and up. Now we get to hear about the Canadian fire that seems to have hit some of the Crude supply to the North American side of the continent and that coupled with the weak Dollar seems to be egging the Crude prices way up.
The recently held OPEC conference did not do much for any of us in the sense that all that was decided was to increase the supply but the catch is that the supply is not being increased right away and not by that much.
